I’m excited to be starting a new teaching series on Sunday mornings this Fall, looking at the first half of the book of Exodus! Here’s an overview of what we’ll be talking about in this series, plus a few helpful resources for further study.

I believe that the Exodus event is the clearest gospel foreshadowing that we see in the Old Testament Scriptures. (That is why we gave the series the subtitle, “The Gospel According to Moses.”) While the work of Christ revealed in the New Testament calls us to interpret all of the Bible in a Christ-centered way, there is no place where this may be easier to do than in the story of God’s glorious salvation of the Israelites from Egypt.

An Old Testament scholar named Alec Motyer makes this point way better than I can:

Think about it. Think of what an Israelite would say on the way to Canaan after passing through the Red Sea. If you asked an Israelite, “Who are you?” he might reply, “I was in a foreign land under the sentence of death and in bondage, but I took shelter under the blood of the lamb. And our mediator led us out, and we crossed over. Now we’re on our way to the Promised Land, though we’re not there yet. But he has given us his law to make us a community, and he has given us a tabernacle because we must live by grace and forgiveness. And he is present in our midst, and he will stay with us until we arrive home.

There are so many connections between the Exodus story and the gospel of Jesus announced in the New Testament, but we’ll just look at five of them in this series:

  • Week 1: The Call of Moses (Exodus 1-4)
  • Week 2: God’s Hand & Pharaoh’s Heart (Exodus 5-9)
  • Week 3: The Substitute (Exodus 11-12)
  • Week 4: The Cloud, The Fire, & The Sea (Exodus 13-14)
  • Week 5: The Law of Freedom (Exodus 19-20)

One way you can prepare for each coming Sunday is by studying the biblical passages above in your own devotional time. You can also consult our series resources, which include:

Throughout the series, we’ll see how the entire Bible is really one big story of how God’s mighty power has worked to save us from bondage through a Sacrificial Lamb!

See you on Sunday,

John Antonucci
